Posted by robyn | Bike World, Travel and Riding Blog | Tuesday 8 June 2010 2:08 pm

I have been racing BMX quite a bit in 2010. This past weekend I took three of the neighborhood kids to race for their first time, three siblings, and not only did they all do great, they all won trophies.

Gear ratio size calculators

Posted by robyn | Bike World | Wednesday 12 May 2010 3:02 pm

A quick link here for online gear ratio calculators, for finding or comparing gear ratios, sizes, or gear inches. Especially helpful when fine tuning spin, or trying to match spin between different sized bikes. I always had trouble remembering where these handy tools lived online, so I figured I would create a post and put one here permanently.

For reference, the standard 20″ BMX gearing is 44T on the front, 16T on the rear, 44/16. That gives you 55 gear inches. 41/15 gives you 54.7 gear inches, which is very close. So you can see how you can change sizes front to back and still achieve the same basic gear inch size, giving you the same resistance at the pedals.

For 24″ cruisers, factory Redline runs 41/18, for 54.7 gear inches.

On my 26″ Ti P, I run 32/14, for 59.4 gear inches, a bit taller for a bigger wheeled bike.

Keep in mind that tire size/volume and crank length can affect the actual ratio and feel, apples to apples…

Arapahoe Cyclery is my home shop in Colorado. They also have a BMX selection. Giant and Trek brands are the main focus.

I first went to The Bike Shop on King Street back in the early 80’s, 1981 or 1982. I was living in Maui, in grade school, and racing BMX. In my small world, I thought The Bike Shop was the coolest shop in the world.

Colorado BMX racing- County Line BMX in Denver

Located in Littleton, in the south Denver Metro area, the County Line BMX track is a part of the South Suburban Parks and Recreation department. They have a terrible website at SSPRD.org, which is so poorly organized that I have a hard time finding info on the racquetball schedules, much less usable info on the County Line BMX track.

These are NOT my pics, these are just great (or nostalgic) bike pics that I have picked up over the years while browsing the Wide Wide World of Web. If you see your own pic in this collection, and have beef with it appearing here, let me know and I can remove it. That would be super lame though.
